American Porter: dark American beer perfect for winter

American Porter is a dark beer that combines toasted and caramel malts with American hops, creating a complex, full-bodied, and slightly alcoholic profile, ideal for cold months. This recipe is suitable for All Grain, Extract + Grain (E+G), or BIAB (Brew in a Bag) brewing.

Ingredients

Malts:

  • 7 kg Muntons Maris Otter Malt

  • 0.5 kg Muntons Crystal Medium Malt

  • 0.25 kg Muntons Roasted Barley Malt

  • 0.25 kg Muntons Chocolate Malt

  • 0.3 kg Muntons Amber Malt

Hops:

  • 20 g Centennial AA 7.5 (60 min boil)

  • 30 g Centennial AA 7.5 (5 min boil)

  • 20 g Amarillo AA 8 (5 min boil)

Special additives:

  • 50 g Oak Bourbon Chips (added after 5 days of fermentation)

Yeast: LAX WHC
Priming: 4 g/liter

Procedure

Mash:

  • 66°C for 60 minutes

  • 78°C for 15 minutes

Suitable for All Grain or BIAB methods.
For E+G, replace the base malt with light liquid extract keeping similar proportions.

Boil:

  • Boil the wort adding hops according to the times indicated.

Fermentation:

  • Recommended temperature: 18-22°C

  • Add 50 g Oak Bourbon Chips after 5 days for a light woody and bourbon aroma.

Bottling:

  • Priming: 4 g/liter for proper carbonation
